Course Overview
For international professionals engaging with Thailand—whether in business, diplomacy, media, civil society, development, or public service—success depends on more than intercultural sensitivity. It requires a grounded understanding of how the Thai political and legal system functions, how people and institutions behave, and how culture shapes preferences, professional communication, and decision-making.
This course provides a structured and practice-oriented introduction to Thailand’s political, legal, economic, social, and cultural landscape. Designed for professionals working in, with, or on Thailand, it offers foundational insights into the structures, norms, and conditions that shape decision-making and everyday professional life in the country.
The course forms part of our Strategic Local Awareness Building (SLAB) series, which supports foreign professionals in developing a 360-degree understanding of their country of residence. Within this framework, it offers one of the most comprehensive and practice-relevant briefings on Thailand available—combining deep contextual knowledge with the practical understanding needed to navigate institutional, legal, and cultural realities with confidence.
Participants explore the structure and function of Thailand’s key political, administrative, and governance institutions; the regulatory and economic environment; and the education and qualification systems. The course also introduces the legal system—both its formal setup and practical application—as well as the role of informal mechanisms in everyday regulation.
Equal attention is given to societal dynamics, cultural expectations, and informal norms that shape communication, authority, hierarchy, and collaboration in Thai professional contexts.
By linking structural knowledge with lived realities, the course cultivates the contextual awareness essential for operating effectively and sustainably in Thailand.
This course can be booked individually or in combination with our course “Thailand in Practice (II): Cross-Cultural Communication, Management, Leadership & Compliance.” Participants who complete both core courses will be awarded the Advanced Country Expertise Certificate
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the structure and function of Thailand’s key political, legal, and administrative institutions;
- Understand the regulatory and economic environment in Thailand, including implications for business operations, compliance, and investment;
- Understand how formal and informal mechanisms interact in decision-making and regulatory processes;
- Understand how cultural and societal norms influence law enforcement and dispute resolution;
- Apply local knowledge to anticipate challenges and adapt strategies for effective communication, negotiation, and cooperation with Thai counterparts; and
- Integrate structural and cultural insights into professional practice, enhancing the capacity to operate effectively, ethically, and sustainably in Thailand.
Course Content
The course is structured around four core dimensions that build on each other:
- Module 1: Understanding the Thai State – Political, Administrative, and Governance Structures
- Module 2: Law in Theory and Practice – Thailand’s Legal and Regulatory Landscape
- Module 3: Economic and Institutional Environment – Business, Regulation, and Development
- Module 4: Society and Culture – Informal Norms and Social Expectations
Target Group / Audience
This course is designed for foreign professionals who are operating in Thailand or are confirmed to relocate and want to gain a deeper knowledge of their country of residence.
The course is suitable for participants from both commercial and non-commercial sectors and can be adapted for mixed or sector-specific groups.

- 16 hours, delivered in four in-person sessions of 4 hours each

Customization Options
The course is offered as a pre-structured executive training format. However, it can also be delivered as a fully customized in-house program, tailored to your organization’s institutional context, strategic goals, and risk exposure in Thailand.
When delivered in an in-house format, the course may be adapted:
- To sector-specific priorities, focusing on how Thailand’s political, legal, and regulatory frameworks affect your industry (e.g., infrastructure, logistics, digital economy, manufacturing, development cooperation);
- To institutional engagement needs, with enhanced focus on how to work effectively with Thai ministries, regulatory bodies, or subnational administrations;
- To regional exposure, incorporating tailored insights into governance and legal realities in particular regions or special economic zones;
- With additional modules on topics such as regulatory enforcement, bureaucratic logic, or informal governance patterns;
- In German, if preferred by the client or participants.
Pricing Structure
The standard course fees are:
- Standard Price: EUR 1,599.00
- Early Bird Price: EUR 1,299.00 (for registrations at least four weeks in advance)
These fees include lunch and refreshments during coffee breaks on all course days.
Discounted rates may be granted to non-commercial clients, such as public institutions, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations.
