CPG Director Henning Glaser at the 6th CDIR East Asia Conference in Beijing

25. September 2026

CPG Director Henning Glaser participated in the 6th Conference of German-Speaking Lawyers in East Asia, held from 17–20 September 2026 at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing.

It was the sixth edition of the conference organized within the framework of the Sino-German Institute of Law (CDIR) and the second to be held in Beijing. Bringing together scholars from across East Asia and beyond, the conference once again stood out for both the high academic quality of its contributions and the exceptionally warm and collegial atmosphere that has become a hallmark of this academic network.

Participants represented a broad range of East Asian jurisdictions, including China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan. At the same time, the conference extended well beyond East Asia, with Southeast Asia represented by scholars based in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, further broadening the regional perspectives and academic exchange.

Under the overarching theme “Digital Society and Legal Renewal,” the conference explored some of the most pressing legal questions arising from digital transformation and artificial intelligence, ranging from constitutional rights and judicial accountability to AI regulation, security, labor law, digital transactions and competition law.

Henning Glaser contributed to the conference with a presentation entitled “Political Anthropology as a Constitutional Prerequisite – The Image of Man and the Concept of Freedom in the Basic Law in the Sign of Technological Upheaval,” delivered as part of the opening section on “Constitutional Order and Justice in the Digital Age.”

Beyond the academic program, the conference provided a particularly welcome opportunity to renew longstanding professional and personal ties. Henning was especially pleased to meet again Prof. Dr. Libin Xie, former Chinese Director of the CDIR. Their meeting also provided an opportunity for an intensive exchange on Chinese constitutional law, a field of longstanding academic interest and engagement.

The conference also brought together colleagues from CPG’s German partner universities, including Dr. Anna Schimke from Goethe University Frankfurt and Prof. Dr. Jan-Frederick Göhsl and Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lohsse from the University of Münster.

Henning also had the pleasure of reconnecting with several other long-standing colleagues, including Prof. Dr. Thomas Schmitz of Universitas Gadjah Mada and Prof. Dr. Masahisa Deguchi of Ritsumeikan University. These encounters provided valuable opportunities for an exchange on future academic cooperation.

CPG sincerely thanks Prof. Dr. Hinrich Julius, Director of the CDIR, for the warm invitation, and Henry Stamer and Balduin Benesch for their excellent organization of this outstanding academic and collegial gathering.
