Constitutional Law and -Politics / Human Rights are a core interest and focus area of CPG. This involves, on the one hand, the description and transferability of German constitutional law and Germany’s experiences with the constitutional political process to Asia. However, from a distance and through comparison, interesting perspectives on one’s own law and constitutional process also emerge. At the same time, the academic interest is primarily focused on Asia, with a particular academic interest in constitutional law and constitutional politics currently centered on Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh, alongside continuous monitoring of constitutional politics from Japan to Pakistan and from Mongolia to Tunisia.
From the perspective of CPG, there are also universal foundational questions for the analysis and comparability of constitutional law and constitutional governance. These questions include issues related to constitutional identity and constitutional change, the interdependence of constitutional law and regional governance, and dealing with societal polarization. In this context, the focus is on the fundamentals of constitutional law and constitutional theory, comparative constitutional analysis, interdisciplinary constitutional studies, constitutional capacity-building, and the rule of law dialogue, as well as selected issues of constitutional law and constitutional politics in Asia.
In addition to its own expertise in constitutional law, facilitated through its German partner universities, CPG can draw upon a broad network of renowned constitutional scholars and practitioners worldwide. Many of these individuals have collaborated closely with CPG as Fellows or Board Members for many years, some since its inception. Many distinguished constitutional scholars and numerous constitutional judges from around the world have contributed to over half a dozen constitutional law-related publications of CPG. Consequently, the CPG academies on constitutional law topics (such as German constitutional law, human rights, and migration) are widely regarded as among the best in the international market.
Overall, CPG is unique as an information and advisory body for German constitutional law in Asia, but it has also developed into one of the internationally leading addresses for information and consultation on Asian constitutional law and Asian constitutional politics.
