The second major focus area, which has been integral to CPG since its establishment, is the field of Peace & Security and issues related to Geopolitics / International & Regional Order. Initially, the emphasis lay on intra-state and international conflicts and hotspots in Asia and their interaction with human rights and the rule of law, as well as conflict resolution measures. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in analyzing the transformation of regional orders in Asia in response to global developments.
Overall, the field of Peace and Security within the context of regional and international order-building has gained tremendous importance in Asia in recent years. Within individual societies, radicalization and polarization have increased rather than decreased. The civil war in Myanmar has created a zone of violence, organized crime, and human rights abuses with regional implications, and the continent’s major conflict zones have heated up over the years. All of this is happening against the backdrop of emerging configurations of critical transformations in global order, geopolitical balances, and changing globalization trends.
The emergence of a new Asian order raises questions about national and regional security on the one hand and the stabilization and resolution of conflicts on the other. At the same time, their significance for Germany’s foreign policy orientation towards Asia and the promotion of German and European standards in areas such as environmental policy, human rights, and the rule of law is increasing.
